This is caused when the body does not have enough liquid. There
may be a fever with this because of some infection or virus in
the stomach.
The first thing to know is that this is VERY dangerous for children.
You need to go to the emergency room as soon as possible.
A child can die when his body does not have enough liquid. Bleeding
in the diaper or a dry diaper are signs that this is a serious
emergency!
Do NOT give babies or children ANY milk if there are sick like
this. Milk will make everything worse.
Give them only Gatorade or Pedialyte which many times brings
them back from being sick. They can have water but NO food for
at least a day!
You are going to be tempted to nurse or feed the child but if
you do then you are making everything worse!
Fever
You should take their temperature. Anything over 103 degrees
is a serious fever. When a fever is above 104 degrees the child
is serious danger!
If the fever is above 103 degrees you need to go the emergency
room immediately!
If you cannot go for some reason then put the child in lukewarm
water in the bathtub and splash water over him.
Give him children’s Tylenol and Ibuprofen
alternating every two hours.
For example, if you give your child Tylenol at noon, you can
give him Ibuprofen at 3 p.m. and then Tylenol again at 6 p.m.
and Ibuprofen again at 9 p.m. Neither medicine should be used
for more than 24 hours without going to the doctor.
The Diarrhea [BRAT] Diet
If the child stops vomiting and having Diarrhea and the fever
is low (Example 101 -102) and a day has passed, you can begin
to give him some food. Keep watching the diaper.
Continue giving Gatorade and NO milk.
First Day
Bananas, Rice (white with NO sauce), Applesauce, and Toast.
Second Day
Try some Apple juice or soft drink. Try some crackers or oatmeal.
Try some clear broth soup. Try some watermelon. Try some skinless
baked chicken. Try some potatoes with nothing added to them.
No spicy food or sugar! Do not try a lot of meat for a few days.
If things are not better after two days you must get this child
to a doctor immediately.
